Low Temperature Catalytic Ethanol Conversion Over Ceria-Supported Platinum, Rhodium, and Tin-Based Nanoparticle Systems

Due to the feasibility of ethanol production in the United States, ethanol has become more attractive as a fuel source and a possible energy carrier within the hydrogen economy. Ethanol can be stored easily in liquid form, and can be internally pre-formed prior to usage in low temperature (200 o C – 400 o C) solid acid and polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. However, complete electrochemic...

Carboxylated polymers functionalized by cyclodextrins for the stabilization of highly efficient rhodium(0) nanoparticles in aqueous phase catalytic hydrogenation.

Rhodium(0) nanoparticles stabilized by a polymer containing carboxylate and β-cyclodextrin moieties have high stability and catalytic activity for aqueous hydrogenation reactions of olefins and aromatic substrates. This catalytic system can be recycled and reused without loss of activity. These high catalytic performances can be attributed to conjugated electrostatic interactions (carboxylate g...

Performance of Sulfur Tolerant Reforming Catalysts for Production of Hydrogen from Jet Fuel Simulants

The development of robust desulfurizers and new reforming catalysts is a critical path for the use of jet fuels in powering the commercial growth of fuel cell systems for air and military applications. The presence of high concentrations of sulfur-containing organic compounds leads to rapid deactivation of traditional reforming catalysts, and removal of the sulfur components from the fuel throu...

Molecular ligand modulation of palladium nanocatalysts for highly efficient and robust heterogeneous oxidation of cyclohexenone to phenol

Metallic nanoparticles are emerging as an exciting class of heterogeneous catalysts with the potential advantages of exceptional activity, stability, recyclability, and easier separation than homogeneous catalysts. The traditional colloid nanoparticle syntheses usually involve strong surface binding ligands that could passivate the surface active sites and result in poor catalytic activity. The...

Rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric 1,4-addition reactions of aryl boronic acids with nitroalkenes: reaction mechanism and development of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available. See DOI: 10.1039/c7sc03025h

Asymmetric 1,4-addition reactions with nitroalkenes are valuable because the resulting chiral nitro compounds can be converted into various useful species often used as chiral building blocks in drug and natural product synthesis. In the present work, asymmetric 1,4-addition reactions of arylboronic acids with nitroalkenes catalyzed by a rhodium complex with a chiral diene bearing a tertiary bu...
